Specific Learning Difficulties

The performance of many able students is often impaired due to difficulties in reading, writing and spelling, (Dyslexia, Dyspraxia). Notable examples are Einstein, Faraday, Leonardo da Vinci, Roald Dahl, Rodi and Winston Churchill, Walt Disney and many more.

The School operates a rescue package for such pupils on an integrated, whole-school basis.  Individual multi-sensory teaching by specialist trained teachers is complemented by assistants at subject level and by the use of readers and scribes in class and for examinations, where appropriate.

Seminars are also organised to make staff aware of the other conditions such as Asperger’s syndrome (High functioning Autism), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) which require the use of special strategies to make learning possible.

The perception of learning support by the general public is that it concentrates on pupils with significant learning difficulties e.g., slow learners. However, at Cademuir we recognise that all pupils can have learning difficulties at some point and, in learning support here, we consider pupils across the whole range of ability.

One of our most important aims is to improve and maintain the overall morale of pupils i.e.. to give them a greater feeling of self-esteem and to improve their self-confidence so that they are capable of achieving the targets set. Pupil motivation is crucial and, towards this end, as much encouragement as possible is provided; pupils are trained to think positively about themselves. It is important that targets set should be within their range of attainment to give them a significant sense of achievement. Pupils are most likely to learn when they are motivated, actively involved in their learning and have positive relationships with their teachers.

We recognise the importance of different learning styles and the value and need for a wide range of teaching strategies.
